Tuka Says... Part 2

Sushama Joag

The Saint – Poet – Philosopher Tukaram derived the philosophy of omnipresent, omniscient, eternal God from Vedopanishads. But what is more important is that he assimilated and practised this philosophy with a total devotion towards Almighty in his personal, family and social life. In one of his Abhangs Saint Tukaram proclaims proudly that only the devotees of the Almighty have understood the real meaning of Vedas.
On 12th April 1961 the Soviet astronaut Yuri Gagarin completed one orbit of earth in his spaceship Vostok 1, and became the first human to journey into space. After a couple of days of this breaking news, another news flashed… Premier Nikita Khrushchev of the atheist Soviet government announced that on asking whether he saw God up there, Gagarin proclaimed “I went up to space, but I didn’t encounter God.”
Saint – Philosopher Tukaram has answered this question long ago in many of his Abhangs. Here is one such Abhang in which Saint Tukaram says that God is the principle that dwells in the mind and is all pervading, leaving no place in the universe vacant.

                          ~ Saint Tukaram

There is no place (in the universe) without my Lord. No place (in the universe) is (thus) empty.
My Hari ( meaning : God : He who takes away evil) is there in totality within devotees and non-devotees.
He imparts self luminosity to devotees and they attain knowledge. Devotees get self enlightened, awakened to knowledge by His presence within.
He is there within (the body of) non-devotees (as well, but) like fire staying within a wooden log.(Fire is not seen vividly in a wooden log. That’s why wooden articles are used in everyday life safely. But fire / energy does exist in a wooden log, in a dormant state though. Once ignited with a spark the wooden log starts burning, thus revealing the inner fire / energy, which is released during the burning process. Similarly extra efforts are required to reveal the God dwelling within non-devotees.)
Tuka says that men and women (awakened to the eternal truth) have been always propagating this through their deeds.
