Attributes of Formless God - Part 2
Sushama JoagFor Prarthana Samaj God is Saguna Niraakaar (formless God with attributes). In simple terms God has many attributes except shape or form.
Brahma in Upanishads
Brahmarshi Devendranath Tagore did the pioneering work of giving a sound basis of Upanishads to the doctrine of Brahmoism. Upanishads describe the supreme power as formless Brahma with a number of attributes. Devendranath summarised the attributes of Brahma/God in the following single verse :
सत्यं ज्ञानमनन्तं ब्रह्म | आनन्दरूपममृतं यद् विभाति |
शान्तं शिवमद्वैतम् | शुद्धमपापविद्धम् ||
( सत्यम् ज्ञानम् अनन्तम् ब्रह्म |
आनन्दरूपम् अमृतम् यद् विभाति |
शान्तम् शिवम् अद्वैतम् |
शुद्धम् अपापविद्धम् || )
Brahma : Eternal Truth
Satyam (सत्यम्) is an attribute of Brahma. Brahma is regarded as the epitome of Satyam (Satyaswaroop).
Origin of the word Satyam is ‘Satatam‘ meaning incessant. The one which is always present is Satyam. God is Satyam means God is eternal or Nitya. Everyone in the Universe is governed by one’s own motion (गति) comprising creation, sustenance and end. God/Brahma, the author of the Universe, has neither origin nor end. God is Anadi-Anant, eternal, Nitya, Satya. God is beyond the binding of time (Kaal, काल), and therefore, is referred to as Akaal (अकाल).
Satyam being present always, it does not change with time. It is translated in English as truth. Truth is also fact or reality. Even when truth is obscure it reveals itself some time or the other. The saying from Upanishads ‘सत्यमेव जयते‘ upholds truth above all the values.
Upasana of Satyaswaroop (epitome of truth) Brahma :
Brahmopasana is to try to understand Brahma. Upasana of Satyaswaroop Brahma is to recognise that God is eternal and the cause behind everything in the Universe. Upasana of Satyaswaroop Brahma also means to realise that God is in truthfulness. To acquire truthfulness in one’s life is the Upasana of God. Always to abide by truth, to follow the path of truth, impregnation of all the deeds and thoughts with truthfulness is the real worship and Upasana of Satyaswaroop God/Brahma.
Abiding by truth is often a difficult route to follow. Faith in God as the epitome of truth inspires courage to remain on the path of truth.
