In the lake of bliss are ripples of bliss. The body of bliss is made of bliss only.
What should I tell? The thing that happened is difficult to describe. I loved it so much that it was not possible to move beyond.
A (pregnant) mother craves for those things the foetus likes. Their love and affection for each other are in the same place.
Tuka says that it has created such a deep impression that the great experience came out (automatically) from the mouth (speech).
In this Abhang Saint Tukaram spells out, using a metaphor of lake, his revelation of God as the epitome of bliss (Anand) and experience of the ultimate happiness to have the same principle within.
In support of his revelation he gives an example of foetus in the womb of the mother. The cravings of a pregnant mother are considered to be entirely in tune with the liking of the foetus. Love and affection between the mother and the foetus have no parallel. This example signifies the ultimate affection, oneness of the two.
The attribute of God termed as ‘bliss’ in the beginning of this Abhang is, thus, illustrated with an example of ‘ultimate love’ in the subsequent stanza by Saint Tukaram.
Remarkably, in the book “Brahmo Dharma of Maharshi Debendranath Tagore” translated into English by Hem Chandra Sarkar(1928), the term Anand in Upanishads is interpreted as Love. God is epitome of bliss means God is epitome of love.
Very well described by Dr Sushama Joag.Saints have exclusively different spirit of God .For them God dwells within like a foetus in mother’s stomach .Total pleasure within him.It is very difficult for a common man to conceive this idea.Is it not ?
Dear Madam, you rightly said that there is difference between saints and common people.
In this Abhang Saint Tukaram has used a metaphor of lake for the attribute ‘bliss’ of God and illustration of foetus and mother for the attribute ‘love’ of God. Together the message is that God is epitome of bliss (Anand) which is the same as love. Message for common people is that as a part of Upasana of God nurture love for all and thereby experience the true happiness.
Beautiful. So well expressed.
सुंदर निरूपण.
