Pasaaydaan : The Universal Prayer By Saint Dnyaneshwar -Part 3

Sushama Joag

In the concluding part of the last, eighteenth chapter of Dnyaneshwari, the narrative work dedicated to Almighty God, Vaagyadnya, Saint Dnyaneshwar prays Him for dispensation of Pasaaya/Prasaad. From the second and third Ovees of Pasaayadaan (refer to Part-2) it is evident that the Pasaaya that Saint Dnyaneshwar prays for is welfare of the entire universe. He prays to the Almighty that wickedness and evil may vanish, righteousness, duty-fullness and friendliness may grow up, and everyone’s wish may be fulfilled. Saint Dnyaneshwar, however, does not stop here. In the next Ovee he describes how this may be achieved.

वर्षत सकळ मंगळी | ईश्वरनिष्ठांची मांदियाळी |
अनवरत भूमंडळी | भेटतु भूतां ||

Varshata sakala mangali |
Ishwaranishthhaanchi maandiyaali |
Anavarata bhoomandali |
Bhetatu bhootaan ||

May coherent groups of righteous persons faithful to Almighty, showering all welfare, meet all the beings.

(In this Ovee Dnyaneshwar spells out how the road to the desired transformation of the world, as described in the preceding two Ovees, may be paved. He prays to the Almighty that righteous people who trust God and carry out noble deeds for the welfare of the society may meet all the beings always. Through these interactions everyone in this world would come to know the right path to lead life, and the desired transformation would come into reality.)

Pasaayadaan brings out the extraordinary positive attitude of Saint Dnyaneshwar. In their own personal life the four siblings, Nivrutti, Dnyaneshwar, Sopan and Muktabai experienced tremendous harassment from the orthodox society; but agony does not show up in any of their poetic compositions. Dnyaneshwar has strong faith in the proactive nature of righteous people loyal to Almighty. This faith reflects in his prayer to God, saying that a large number of such saintly persons engaged in doing noble deeds may meet all the beings and interact with them, guide them. This will bring about the transformation of this world into paradise.

In two Ovees of Pasaayadaan that follow, Saint Dnyaneshwar describes the characteristics of the saintly persons with the help of a number of metaphors.
