Raja Rammohun Roy (22 May 1772 – 27 September 1833) in recognition of his pioneering work in the field of social, religious and educational reform is known as Father of Modern India. He was responsible for introducing modern education including modern science to India. He led the movement to abolish oppressive traditions, the most cruel of all being the Sati practice, in the orthodox Indian society. It was Raja Rammohun Roy who first conceived a universal religion after studying the original scriptures of various world religions. He founded what was eventually named as Brahmo Samaj in which formless, all pervading and omniscient supreme principle called Brahma is prayed.
